Gingerbread Man Unit

This page is a work in progress. I will be continuing to update it as I find new ideas for my collection. Some of these ideas I have used for a while and others I have collected from a variety of sources. If I haven't given credit and you know the source, please let me know so I can include it. Thanks!

I use the Gingerbread Man theme at the beginning of school. It is my way of getting my Kinders out and about to see people and places in the school. We read the story and then bake our own cookie or cookies. But he always seems to disappear from the kitchen! I spread the Gingerbread Man's disappearance out over 2 days so that they are eager to return to school. We have fun finding clues and writing notes to the Gingerbread Man. My Kinders always blame the poor Gingerbread Man whenever anything is misplaced in the room, long after September! =o)

Gingerbread Man Rap/Song

sing to: "Jimmy Crack Corn"

A baker took some gingerbread dough

And shaped a man from head to toe.

When it was baked, the cookie fled.

Here is what the cookie said:

Run! Run! As fast as you can!

You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!

Run! Run! As fast as you can!

I'm the little Gingerbread Man!

The cookie man ran past a cow

Who said, "I want to eat you now!"

The cookie man just laughed and fled.

Here is what the cookie said:

Run! Run! As fast as you can!

You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!

Run! Run! As fast as you can!

I'm the little Gingerbread Man!

A farmer saw the man go by.

He chased him low, he chased him high.

The cookie man just shook his head.

Here is what the cookie said:

Run! Run! As fast as you can!

You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!

Run! Run! As fast as you can!

I'm the little Gingerbread Man!

He finally reached the river wide,

A fox asked, "Would you like a ride?"

The cookie sat on the fox's head,

Here is waht the sly fox said:

"You can't run! That's my plan!

I'm going to eat you, Gingerbread Man!

You can't run! That's my plan!"

And he ate the gingerbread man!

Projects/Activities

Gingerbread Man project

Gingerbread Man Shapes (enlarge a cookie cutter) are copied on construction paper. The Kinders decorate with crayons, paper and glue. Then we cut them out. This gives me a chance to see where they are with scissors and supplies. Of course, we have many mini-lessons on how to use these materials, but this project is a sort of baseline. I help as much as needed.

Miscellaneous

Sequence the story- build from 1-3 events up to 4-6 events.

Leave a trail of messages that the Gingerbread Man has left to take a tour of the school building.

Gingerbread Man Puppet

These materials are set out at the art table for Kinders to use. Wallpaper, bags, brown shapes, glue, fancy scissors and markers.
