Visual
Strategies in Kindergarten
I have 2 students
this year that I am using picture schedules and task cards with.
They have difficulty with auditory processing so we use visual
cues to supplement their understanding of school events and activities.
There are many
resources available and some that I have used are:
Mayer-Johnson, Inc. - Products for Special Needs
and Education
They have the
Boardmaker
software that was used for the samples on this page.
You can reach
them at
P.O. Box 1579

These are daily
schedule cards that I use with the whole class. They hang on the
board. I have groups of 4 items because that seems manageable
for 5 year olds.
Here are my
daily schedule cards

This is the
student's folder that his para helps him with. Again we do about
4 cards per time and include his special teachers or activities.
He is getting
very good at changing his cards and we let him take off each one
as it is completed.
I have used
a vinyl folder for durability. This is an idea that I got a workshop
from Lyn Johnson, an ECSE teacher.
The task strip is for
listening. If I talk, he listens and puts his pencil down.
This is a close-up
of the inside of the folder.
Here is the
cover of the folder.
These blue
strips were the cards from last year and I prefer the new method
better. It is easier to work with and manage.
