Family Activity
Calendar
Each month a calendar
will be sent home for your child that includes activities designed
to coincide with our classroom activities or skills that will
extend or enhance their kindergarten experience and allow you
to share in their learning first hand.
There will be
space for you to comment and also to initial the activities that
were completed. Please comment about successes and challenges
that your child experiences while working on the activities. That
will help me as I plan new experiences for our class.
The calendar should
be returned at the end of each month.
September's Calendar
coming soon.

Home and
Back Envelope
This is a special
envelope that will come home occasionally with your child. It
will contain something special for you to read with them. The
material in the envelope must be returned to school in the envelope
on the next school day. Some examples of things in the envelope
are: little books we make and read in class, class books to read
for enjoyment, special projects related to a subject area or a
favorite classroom game.
Many of the little
books we make this year will be kept at school to use at Read,
Write and Rest time (our quiet time each day.) When they come
home the Home and Back Envelope read them with your child and
then return them.

Show and
Tell Bag
Each day we will take a few minutes for the students to share
something special. We have a special show and tell bag that will
come home with your child when it is their turn to share. There
will be a special note indicating a letter of the alphabet and
a particular theme. You may choose to send something that begins
with the letter or that relates to our theme. Please follow these
guidelines.
GUIDELINES FOR SHOW & TELL:
*Mark your child's name
on the item if you are afraid it may get lost or stolen.
*Fragile and expensive items are discouraged.
*Guns or knives of any type are not allowed.
*No pets are allowed in the school building this year.
*Please "PRACTICE" at home - ask your child what they
may say or show when they get the item to school.
*The item must fit in
the show and tell bag.
FRIDAYS ARE LETTER DAY!

child may bring something that begins with that letter for sharing
on Friday.

Pumpkin
Carving
October 29 or
30, 2001
It's time to start thinking
about carving the pumpkins we planted (or the ones we bought,
depending ...!) Each child needs an adult to help them, IF ANY
PARENT OR GRANDPARENT (even more than one per child) is free that
day, you are welcome to join us and help! The more "big"
hands, the better! Please let me know if no one can come to work
with your child or if your child needs a pumpkin so I can make
arrangements for them.
The morning of carving
send with your child a medium sized pumpkin in a double bag (a
grocery bag with handles is great!) Please write your child's
name on the bottom of their pumpkin.
We will be comparing and weighing our pumpkin so send it to school
with your child if possible.
The afternoon of carving
parents please bring:
A pumpkin carving tool (available in a retail store Halloween
section), but no knives!
a scoop or spoon (ice cream scoops work great!)
an ice cream pail to collect goop
a cookie sheet to work on
a newspaper to work on
Remember to dress casual,
the goop may be everywhere!
The pumpkin will go home on carving day, you may also take your
child if you wish, or they may ride the bus. Please help me make
this a special activity for parents/grandparents and kindergartners,
no younger brothers and sisters.

Ted E. Bear
Ted E. Bear's here for
a visit!
Ted gets to visit each
Kindergarten family to find out more about his friends. Please
include Ted in family activities when it is appropriate and let
him take a nap in a safe place when he can't come along. Ted will
come back to school with your child on their next school day.
The plan is for each child to have Ted over a weekend.
He has a tablet/journal
for you to record the exciting adventures that he has with your
family. The journal entries will be shared with the class when
your child comes back to school. If you take any pictures send
them to school when they are developed. We would love to see Ted's
adventures in pictures. The pictures will be displayed in our
classroom.
Ted needs to come back
to school with your child on their next school day. He has a busy
schedule if he plans to make it to everyone's home before school's
out!
Enjoy Ted and
the bedtime story he brought along to share.
The objectives of his
visit are:
1. To foster a sense of responsibility.
2. To provide your child with an experience to verbalize to their
class
3. To provide a connection between school and home.
Ted E. comes with a bedtime story and a journal. There are instructions
inside to follow. Remember, Ted doesn't like baths or dogs. Please
record his adventures and send them back to school. Each child
may keep Ted until their next school day. Don't forget to bring
him back -- someone else is waiting for a turn. And waiting for
your turn is the hardest part.
Should something contagious turn up while Ted is at your house
please let me know and we will put Ted into a short hibernation
until the school nurse gives him the all clear.

Author Bag
In January, we
will begin using our Author Bag. The Author Bag is a "briefcase"
equipped with special writing supplies. The objective is for the
children to create a story with you that has meaning to them.
Please help your child create a story for our classroom. It is
up to you to decide on the story subject, how much your child
can do on their own and how much help they will need from you.
These stories will become a special part of our classroom library.
Please guide your child on their subject choice and do not allow
them to create a story to share that has negative experiences,
fighting or violence. Each child will get to keep the bag for
a week. The Author Bag will contain special instructions about
the contents.
