Handprint Calendar

(Click here to view my entire Hand Unit which includes more handprint poems and projects.)

We made this calendar for a Christmas gift for our parents. Each month has a poem and handprint art to go with it. The poem was printed on regular paper and then the handprint art was added using tempera paint. Details were added as needed. The monthly calendar grids were created using Appleworks. The yearly calendar grid was made with Print Shop Deluxe.

This calendar would make a great gift for anytime - just arrange the layout accordingly. You could do a layout from September to August to cover the school calendar if you like.

The parent's loved this gift. I hope it becomes a keepsake.

 To construct the calendar:

I photocopied the pages double sided onto 65 lb. white cardstock. Then bound them with our comb binder.

Just lay them out to determine the layout for copying that works for you.

The ideas for this project are a combination of my resources and contributions to the KinderKorner list serve.

 COVER:

I know you wipe some away
But these handprints were made to stay.
Once a month I made for you
Some are red, some are blue.
So keep them forever, a treasure they'll be.
A special "I Love You" for you from me.

JANUARY:

Sometimes you get discouraged because I am so small,

And always leave my fingerprints on furniture and walls.

But everyday I am growing -I'll be grown up someday.

And all these tiny fingerprints will simply fade away.

So here's a final handprint just so you can recall,

Exactly how my fingers looked when I was very small.

I love you!

One Red Valentine

One red valentine,
Two red valentines,
three red valentines, four,
I'll snip and cut and color and paste,
and then make twenty more

To make the handprint art - Heart:

Fingers together - fingertips point downward and palms make curves of heart.

 MARCH:

Look at me

Look at me!
It isn't showing.
You can't see it.
But I'm growing!

To make the handprint art:

Just a handprint!

Add a small photo of the child - I used the kindergarten photo taken at school.

APRIL:

Rain

The rain spills down
Upon the town
Like water from a cup.
The thing I just can't understand
Is how the rain gets UP.

To make the handprint art - umbrella top:

Spread fingers and stamp at an angle. Fingertips are the scalloped bottom of umbrella, palm is top. Add handle and rain with crayons.

 MAY:

Tulips
In the garden
Tulips grow
Straight and golden
In a row.
Each one holds its
Empty cup
Drinking rain and
Sunshine up.

To make the handprint art-tulips:

Stamp handprint with fingers together and fingers pointing up. Use one finger painted green for the stems and a thumb painted green for the leaves. This year we just used crayons for details!

 JUNE:

Fuzzy Wuzzy Caterpillar

Fuzzy wuzzy caterpillar into a corner will creep.
He'll spin himself a blanket and then go fast asleep.

Fuzzy wuzzy caterpillar will wake up by and by.
To find he has wings of beauty, changed to a butterfly!

To make the handprint art-butterfly:

Make two handprints with thumbs touching in the center for the body of the caterpillar. Add details as desired.

The Fish

I hold my fingers like a fish,
And wave them as I go.
See them swimming with a swish,
So swiftly to and fro.

To make the handprint art-fish:

Fingers together and thumb pointed down. Fish face is placed on the palm area of hand.

  AUGUST:

The Sun

Over there the sun gets up,
And marches all the day.
At noon, it stands right overhead.
At night, it goes away.

To make the handprint art - sun:

Use several handprints with palm overlapping and fingers pointing out for sun rays.

 SEPTEMBER:

The Apple Tree

Away up high in the apple tree,
two red apples smiled at me.
I shook the tree as hard as I could
and down came the apples,
Mmmmm were they good!

To make the handprint art - apples:

Stamp palm of hand twice. Make stem and leaf with thumb and finger prints. Add smiling faces with crayons.

Pretty Leaves are falling down.
See them lying on the ground?
Falling down with the greatest ease,
Don't you love the falling leaves.

To make the handprint art - tree and leaves:

Paint child's hand and arm brown and stamp on paper to make tree. Then use fingers to stamp leaves all around.

As anyone can see,
I made it with my hand,
Which is a part of me.
It comes with lots of love
Especially to say,
I hope you have a very

Happy Thanksgiving Day!

Say I will be bound---
I'm so busy---I don't see
How Santa gets around!
