Read, Write and Rest Time

I have Read, Write and Rest Boxes that hold mini-books for my students that they read or color during quiet time/rest time in the classroom. I add a new book each day so that at the end of the school year they have a huge collection of easy reader, phonetic books to take with them for summer reading and to use as they learn to read in First Grade.

The collections includes Leap Frog Press Alphabet books, Dr. Jean Books (see links below), leveled readers from readinga-z.com, alphabet books and also the mini-readers from our District's reading series.

The box is a shoebox size rubbermaid tub that I purchase for less than $1.00 each. I place a name tag on the end of the box and the children keep them in their cubbies. They bring a set of colored pencils from home that we keep in the box. A volunteer sharpens the pencils periodically.

While the children are having quiet time, I hold guided reading groups, do 1:1 remedial instruction or work on gathering data for assessments and progress reports.
